This owner is a composite, but we hear some version of that line often. In this version it's a Queensland fit-out business with a dozen staff and two strong years behind it. The owner heard about Round 7 of the Business Growth Fund after registrations of interest had closed and put the idea off until Round 8.

Planning to apply next time is sensible. The hidden assumption, that the next round will look like the last one, isn't.

What Round 7 offered

A commercial kitchen pass with the shutter half lowered.

The Queensland Ministerial Media Statements site reports that Round 7 was announced on 27 November 2025 by Steve Minnikin, Minister for Customer Services and Open Data and Minister for Small and Family Business. The program budget was $3.5 million. Grants ranged from $50,000 to $75,000, and applicants had to fund at least half of the project cost themselves. Registrations of interest closed on 30 January 2026.

Business Queensland's Business Growth Fund Program page confirms the grant range ($50,000 to $75,000 excluding GST) and the 50% co-contribution. It says the program is run by the Department of Customer Services, Open Data and Small and Family Business. BDO's article on the round gives the same amounts and the same closing date.

BDO also explains how the round worked. There were two stages. Businesses first lodged a registration of interest. Those that got through then submitted a full application, which was assessed competitively.

BDO summarises the Round 2 eligibility criteria as:

  • fewer than 20 employees
  • turnover of $500,000 to $10 million

Those criteria belong to Round 7. They show what that round asked for. They tell you nothing about what a later round will ask for.

Where Round 7 stands now

Round 7 is closed to new applicants.

Business Queensland's small and family business grants schedule was last updated on 26 October 2026.

Neither page gives a date for Round 8. The program page doesn't mention any future round, and the November 2025 ministerial statement doesn't either. For news of upcoming grants, both Business Queensland pages point to the same two places: the Business Queensland Connect newsletter and the Business Queensland Facebook page.

Round 7 has its own guidelines

The detail that should change how you wait is on the Queensland Government Publications Portal. The portal has a separate dataset for the Business Growth Fund, Round 7. It holds guidelines version 1.1, created on 30 September 2025 and updated on 19 February 2026. That document applies to Round 7 and to no other round.

"Next round" doesn't mean a date on the calendar. The budget, the grant range, the employee cap, the turnover band, the growth test and the co-contribution could all be different.

So don't plan around Round 7's terms. Plan to read the new guidelines the day they come out. Have your records ready so that reading them and deciding is the only work left.

What to get ready while you wait

Waiting is fine. Waiting with nothing ready isn't. Round 7 was announced on 27 November and registrations of interest closed on 30 January. That's about nine weeks, with Christmas and the January holidays in the middle. If you start gathering records on announcement day, you'll spend much of that window on paperwork you could have finished in a quiet month.

Here's what to get in order:

  1. Three years of financial statements. BDO reports that Round 7 looked at turnover, trading history and growth over two years. Ask your accountant for final versions, not drafts.
  2. Your growth figures, calculated and checked. If a round sets a growth test, you want the numbers worked out in advance, not estimated the night before a deadline.
  3. Your ABN and GST registration details. Make sure they're current and belong to the entity that would apply.
  4. A costed growth project. Write down what you'd buy or build, what it costs, quotes where you can get them, and what it would change for the business.
  5. A clear plan for funding half of it. Round 7 required a 50% co-contribution. Nobody knows yet whether a later round will. Knowing where your share of the money would come from helps with any grant, and with the project itself.
  6. The two channels Business Queensland names. Subscribe to the Business Queensland Connect newsletter and follow the Business Queensland Facebook page.

For the fit-out owner in our composite, the costed project is probably the slowest item. The idea is in the owner's head, not on paper, and quotes take time to arrive.

None of this tells you whether a future round will suit your business. That round's own guidelines will, and the decision is yours.

Keeping track of rounds that fit

Helm Grants can't tell you when, or whether, a Round 8 will open, because nobody has said. It puts Queensland department rounds, Grants Finder, the Gambling Community Benefit Fund and federal rounds in one feed and scores each round against your organisation, with every point itemised. If a round's own text rules out your type of business, it scores that round low and tells you why, then reminds you 7, 3 and 1 days before closing for the rounds you keep. You can watch the newsletter and read every set of guidelines yourself, or have Helm Grants do that and make the call yourself.

If you're waiting for the next Business Growth Fund round, pick the record on the list above that would take you longest to pull together, and start on it this week.

Questions this raises

As of late September 2026, Business Queensland's program page and grants schedule give no date for another round, and the 27 November 2025 ministerial statement doesn't mention future rounds. Both point to the Business Queensland Connect newsletter and the Business Queensland Facebook page for news of upcoming grants.

No. Registrations of interest closed on 30 January 2026, and Business Queensland's program page says recipients have been told their outcomes. The grants schedule lists Round 7 as in progress because the funded projects are under way.

Nobody can say yet. Round 7's guidelines sit in their own dataset on the Queensland Government Publications Portal, so a new round would come with a new document. Read it before you decide.

Business Queensland lists Round 7 grants of $50,000 to $75,000 excluding GST, and applicants had to fund at least half of the project cost. These were Round 7 terms and may not apply to any future round.
